Kathleen Hennessy, consulting editor

Kathleen is director of photography for the San Francisco Chronicle where she has worked since 1998. She was picture editor of the Chronicle’s 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning entry for feature photography. She’s won over a dozen picture editing awards from the National Press photographers Association and the Pictures of the Year International competition. Hennessy served as a staff picture editor in the Clinton White House. She is a former picture editor for Washingtonian magazine in Washington, DC, and for USA TODAY. She was a team editor for the images in The Mission, a photography book published by Time/Warner.

Hennessy has also contributed to non-profits, including as a photographer on medical missions for Operation Smile in Romania, Vietnam and Gaza; as a coordinator for the National Geographic’s Photo Camp, a photography program for underprivileged children and as a faculty member of Somosfoto, a workshop for professional Latin American photographers in Ecuador and the Dominican Republic sponsored by the University of Miami.

Hennessy was a Knight Fellow at Ohio University, where she earned a masters degree in journalism. She has taught photojournalism at Ohio University, San Francisco State University, City College of San Francisco and the University of California-Berkeley.

Barbara Ries’ photographs capture the essence of the human spirit. She has traveled the world documenting poverty and need with an empathetic eye. Her images move people into action.
